A dental crown typically lasts 10 to 15 years, and many last 20 years or more with good care. A crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged tooth completely, restoring its shape and strength. How long yours lasts depends on the material, your bite, whether you grind your teeth and how well you look after it.

When do you need a crown instead of a filling?

A filling repairs a smaller area of damage. A crown is recommended when:

The crown procedure

  1. Preparation. Under local anaesthetic, the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown.
  2. Scan impression of the prepared tooth.
  3. Temporary crown while the permanent one is made, usually one to two weeks.
  4. Fitting. The final crown is checked for fit, bite and colour, then cemented in place.

Our practice offers same-day crowns.

How to make your crown last longer

Signs your crown needs attention

See us if your crown feels loose, you notice pain or sensitivity around it, the gum is receding to show a dark line, or the crown is chipped.

Frequently asked questions

Does getting a crown hurt? The tooth is numbed, so most people feel only pressure. Mild sensitivity afterwards usually settles quickly.

Can a crowned tooth still get decay? Yes, at the edge where the crown meets the tooth, so cleaning there matters.

What happens if my crown falls off? Keep it safe, avoid chewing on that side and call us. It can often be re-cemented.
