What Counts as a Dental Emergency
A dental emergency is any problem that causes severe pain, bleeding that won’t stop, swelling, or damage to a tooth that could be lost if it isn’t treated quickly. Acting early often means a simpler, less costly repair and a better chance of saving the tooth.
Severe Toothache
Throbbing or constant tooth pain, especially pain that keeps you awake, is often a sign of deep decay or infection inside the tooth. We find the cause, relieve the pain and, where possible, save the tooth with root canal treatment.
Knocked-Out or Broken Teeth
If an adult tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently, and try to place it back in the socket or keep it in milk. Come in immediately: a tooth replanted within an hour has the best chance of surviving. Chipped, cracked and broken teeth can usually be repaired with bonding, a crown or a veneer.
- Severe or persistent toothache
- Knocked-out adult tooth
- Chipped, cracked or broken tooth
- Facial or gum swelling
- Dental abscess or a bad taste with pain
- Lost filling or crown
- Broken denture or bridge
- Pain or swelling after wisdom tooth removal
If any of these apply to you, contact us as early in the day as possible so we can fit you in.
When to Go to Hospital Instead
Some situations need hospital care first. Go to your nearest emergency department if you have:
- Swelling that is spreading to your eye or neck
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- A high fever with facial swelling
- Heavy bleeding that won't stop with pressure
- A suspected broken jaw or other facial injury
Once you have been stabilised, we can take over the dental treatment.
Dental Abscesses and Infections
An abscess is a pocket of infection at the root of a tooth or in the gum. It won’t heal on its own, and antibiotics alone usually only delay the problem. Treatment involves draining the infection and treating its source, with a root canal or, if the tooth cannot be saved, an extraction.
Emergency Extractions and Oral Surgery
When a tooth is too badly damaged or infected to save, we can remove it safely in our rooms. Our team has a special interest in oral surgery, including difficult extractions and wisdom teeth, and we provide in-house sedation for all surgical procedures if you are anxious.
Medical Aid for Emergency Treatment
We claim directly from your medical aid for all surgical and implant procedures, so you don’t have to submit the claim yourself. For other emergency treatment, check your plan’s day-to-day dental benefits and our team will help you with the details.
