Yes, you need to clean between your teeth every day. A toothbrush cannot reach the tight spaces between teeth, where plaque builds up and where gum disease and cavities often start. Floss is one option, but interdental brushes or a water flosser work just as well or better for many people. What matters is doing it daily.

Why cleaning between teeth matters

Each tooth has five surfaces, and two of them face neighbouring teeth. Brushing alone leaves plaque in these gaps. Over time that plaque hardens into tartar, irritates gums, and causes decay that often goes unnoticed until it is large.

How to floss properly

  1. Use about 45 cm of floss, wound around your middle fingers.
  2. Guide it gently between teeth with a sawing motion. Do not snap it into the gum.
  3. Curve the floss into a C shape around one tooth and slide it up and down below the gumline.
  4. Repeat on the neighbouring tooth, then move to a clean section of floss for the next gap.
  5. Do it once a day, at whatever time you will stick with.

Is it normal for gums to bleed when I floss?

Some bleeding is common when you start, because gums are inflamed. It usually stops within one to two weeks of daily cleaning. If it continues, book a check-up.

Frequently asked questions

Should I floss before or after brushing? Either works. Flossing first can help fluoride toothpaste reach between teeth.

Can a water flosser replace floss? For many people, especially with braces or implants, it is a good alternative. Ask your hygienist.

I heard flossing doesn’t work. Is that true? Evidence on floss alone is mixed, largely because people do it inconsistently. Cleaning between teeth with any suitable tool is still recommended.
