Veneers are thin, tooth-coloured shells bonded to the front of teeth to improve their shape, colour or alignment. Porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 15 years or more, while composite veneers last around 5 to 7 years. They are a popular way to fix chips, stains that do not respond to whitening, small gaps and uneven teeth.

What can veneers fix?

The veneer process

  1. Consultation and smile design. We discuss your goals and may create a preview of your new smile.
  2. Preparation. For porcelain veneers, a thin layer of enamel is usually removed so the veneer sits naturally.
  3. Impressions or scans are sent to the lab, and temporary veneers may be fitted.
  4. Bonding. The final veneers are checked for fit and colour, then permanently bonded.

Are veneers permanent?

Porcelain veneers are considered irreversible because enamel is removed. The veneers themselves will eventually need replacing, but the commitment to having a veneer on that tooth is lifelong. Some composite veneers need little or no enamel removal.

Caring for veneers

Brush and floss as normal, avoid biting nails, pens or ice, and wear a night guard if you grind your teeth. Regular check-ups help them last as long as possible.

Frequently asked questions

Do veneers look natural? Well-made veneers are matched to your face and other teeth and look very natural.

Do veneers hurt? Preparation is done under local anaesthetic. Some people notice mild sensitivity for a few days.

Can I whiten veneers? No. If you want whiter teeth overall, whiten before your veneers are made.
